After taking care of my family and making sure their futures are secure (careful investments, etc) - I'd start working on causes that are close to home with me: AIDS research and education, battling adult literacy, lupus research, the homeless problem, and fighting for equality for those that are developmentally disabled.
My interest in all of the above stem from events that have happened in my own life. I would hope that if I can donate something to the cause, it would go that much further into battling the problem.
AIDS research/education: I have an uncle that died on my 16th birthday from AIDS complications - and I saw firsthand what he had to deal with regarding the prejudices at the time.
Adult literacy: There is a joy in being able to further your imagination through reading. I've volunteered for years with various adult-literacy programs in the cities I've lived in.
Lupus research: I was diagnosed with systemic lupus in November 2004.
Homelessness: Tampa Bay, unlike California and other places, has exactly two shelters for homeless people. And both of them charge $10 for someone to sleep there. :shaking my head: - which kind of defeats the purpose, if you ask me.
Developmentally disabled: I'm a project manager for a training center that gives them the skills they need to live independently. There are major inroads being made by the skills instructors and counselors that do their best, but they are faced with budget cuts from the federal and state grants that fund them.
What would you do if you found a lottery ticket worth Millions? Would you turn it in or cash it in yourself? If you decided to cash it in, what would you spend it on?
I would cash it in, no need to turn it in, because I strongly believe God works in mysterious ways, and that I found it for a purpose. I'd consider finding it just "another" blessing from God.
I wouldn't spend it all @ one time. I'd give some to the family (since I owe them so much). Everyone who has given me something or has taken care of me, I'd like to give back to them to show them appreciation.
Pay off old debts.
Then, I'd give (some) to the needy. Not that I'm greedy, but I always want to know that I have something, even if I don't ever spend it.
Then, maybe, I'll put enough money away for my funeral, so my family don't have to go through the "fa'asamoa" hassle of "fa'alavelave" when it's my time.
I will be tempted to cash it, but will turn it in.
I found $1000.00 in an envelope and turned it in to the police. I sooooo regretted doing that and thought about it for days. I could've used it to buy me a nice outfit, get pampered at MIMI's, get my car services...I could've done a lot with $1000.00. Eventually, those thoughts went away and the realization that someone out there who is desperate and needed that money had lost it. If that was my money and lost it? I'd be soooooooo devastated. It made me feel better about myself....
And guess what? Police called to come and collect MY $1000.00. No one claimed it!!! You'd be singing 'oh happy day' like I did.
I would hold on to it and wait to hear anything about a lost ticket. If I hear about it in the news or something, I would turn it in.
But, if I don't hear anything within a week, I'm cashing that bad boy. Don't be mad at me, I have a family to support. I mean, look at my kids, aren't they cute?? Wouldn't you want the best for them?? hehehe
